Ancient Coins: GREEK SILVER: Kings of Pergamon, Philetairos, c.269-263
AR Tetradrachm, 16.73g. 26mm. Struck under Antiochos I in the name of the Seleukid vassal Philetairos. Diademed head of the deified Seleukos I to right. Rev. Athena seated to left holding spear and shield; ivy leaf in field to left and bow in field to right; monogram in exergue. Newell, Pergamum 13(obv. die). Imhoof-Blumer, Pörtraitkopfe auf antiken Münzen, 1885, plate I.3(obv. die) SC 309.4b. A few light cleaning marks under old toning. The portrait style is very rugged and expressive; this is the same style as the example illustrated on the cover of Seleukid Coinage by Houghton and Lorber.
