Bendall, "Anonymous Silver", RN 158 (2002), Type 7 and pl. XII, fig. 15. Cohen VII, p. 327, 3. Trau 3982. The P is the Greek letter "rho" for Roma. This type was struck for celebrations at Constantionple during the reign of Constantine I but may have continued for some time. These coins were probably distributed to the crowds. Attractive toning. CONCORDIA AVGGG; TRPS in exergue. Constantinopolis seated on elaborate throne and facing with her foot on a prow; head to right with elaborate turreted crown; she hold scepter and cornucopia. RIC 55a. Wonderful iridescent toning and an exceptionally detailed reverse with a more elaborate throne and headdress on Constantinopolis than is normally seen. The reverse is an outstanding example of late Roman art. Provenance/Pedigree: Extremely Fine $1,750. |
